What makes a good parent?

Being a parent is a goal that a lot of us have.

We all picture how sweet it’ll be when they snuggle up on us. And how much fun we’ll have and how we’ll be the best parent ever.

But what does it mean to be a good parent?

How is “success” measured?

Is it just from being there for you kid? Providing a safe home? Buying them things? Accepting them?

So much goes into being a good parent it seems. I’m not yet a parent so I don’t know and am genuinely curious on traits of excellent parents. I’m still in the imagining phase of all the good times.

After getting a puppy I’ve really reflected on what it means to be a good parent.

I’ve noticed when the dog is hyper and I’m in a focused mood, I can yell at the pup to calm down or take a step back and get into her world. Take her for a run and get the energy out.

So does this make a good parent?

Suspending our beliefs and desires and getting into their world.

Is there one universal thing that great parents share?

How do you avoid shaping them into your image of them? Making a better version of yourself? Is it accepting them for whatever they turn into?

My takeaway from the book Unconditional Parenting was that it seems like a measuring stick for being a good parent is having an obedient kid.

A good kid measured by how well they behave…I could see it but that also seems odd.

Who knew a puppy would make me reflect so much on parenting.
